Since that time (many high-profile indigenous athletes have played in the competition), including Arthur Beetson (the first Aboriginal person to captain an Australian national team in any sport) and former Test match representatives Johnathan Thurston and Greg Inglis. Competing in the finals series are the eight teams that finish at the highest positions at the close of the regular season. In addition to representing their clubs in the premiership, NRL players frequently participate in various representative competitions held during each season. ARLC CEO Andrew Abdo and chairman Peter V’landys confirmed the plan would be to add three teams to the NRL by 2030, of which up to two could be based outside of Australia. This was the first time since 2008 that the first and second-placed teams contested the grand final.
Throughout 2008 (the NRL celebrated 100 years since rugby league was introduced into Australia), with several initiatives to recognise the important milestone, including an extensive marketing campaign called the ‘Centenary of Rugby League’. The opening round saw two matches at Brisbane’s Lang Park, the first featuring reigning champions Brisbane against fellow Queensland side North Queensland, while the second match featured the new club, the Gold Coast, playing St. George Illawarra. After selecting a Papua New Guinea NRL team as the eighteenth franchise (the NRL paused negotiations in April 2025), opting to delay the introduction of a 19th team. Based in Port Moresby (the capital), the team will host its home matches at the National Football Stadium.
Manly secured a 24–10 victory, achieving their second premiership under coach Des Hasler. This marked the club’s inaugural premiership in its eleven-year history and the first for the St. George segment of the joint venture in 31 years. Queensland achieved further historical significance by winning a remarkable fifth consecutive series (triumphing in the 2010 series with a 3–0 score), marking their first Origin clean sweep since 1995.
